Principal's Message

December 3, 2018

Some of the more interesting conversations I have with students are when they end up in my office trying to convince me that their behavior should be excused because something or someone else  made them angry or upset.  It doesn’t work that way. You are always responsible for your words and actions…. And the sooner you learn that important lesson, the sooner you can learn from the experience and move on.  There will always be things going on around you that could trigger a negative response. Part of “adulting” is learning to be responsible for your words and actions and accept the consequences that come along with them.  Learn how to work through a problem or concern.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

  • TRIPOD survey will be given out Monday and Tuesday in your classes; please be thoughtful in your responses as we use this data to help determine schoolwide decisions/direction
  • REGISTRATION activities continue this week Tuesday; please be sure you’re keeping up as the deadline for your registration card is Dec. 13, 2018.  We have teachers/staff who can help you through the process-- come to the LRC this Wednesday night from 5-8 pm
  • SANTA’S VILLAGE is Wednesday night in the cafe
  • MODIFIED bell schedule on Thursday b/c we have an all-school assembly in the gym with speaker Jerry Ackermann from 11 am-12 pm

November 19, 2018

This is Thanksgiving week…. A time when we stop for a bit and take time to thank the people around us for their support and love.  We spend the weekend eating and celebrating with family and friends and beginning to prepare for the Christmas holidays ahead. But how many of us also take the time to think about doing something NOW, making a sacrifice TODAY, so that we can be in a better place in the future?  Think about it….. Putting in the time and doing the work now will allow you to reap the benefits later -- whether it’s completing assignments that are due (or overdue) or getting up earlier and working out to ensure you’re ready for your next KIF season.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday are early release days @ 11:30 am.
  • Tuesday is Student Review Night  from 12-4 pm and 5-8 pm. Invite your parents!
  • Wednesday is safety drill day….report to your period 1 class; we’ll begin at 8:45 am.  After drills are done we go to recess, lunch, and finish with period 2.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone; hope you have a great (and safe) long weekend with your family and friends!!!

WE are responsible for our own destiny.  We make choices every single day -- and they can be positive ones or they can be negative ones.  We can let ourselves be negatively influenced by our friends or peers and get derailed from the path we want….. OR we can learn to make good choices a daily habit.  We can choose to surround ourselves with positive people and activities… or not.  Choose well and choose wisely because many of your decisions have far-reaching and long-lasting consequences.

A few announcements:

  • KCC advisory visit this Thursday -- to Mrs. Lindsey-Meyer’s class
  • Kauai Girls Summit -- this Thursday, all day off campus
  • Friday -- Seniors’ KCC #FindYourFuture event!

Congratulations to the VB girls for placing 4th in last week’s state tournament -- great job ladies!

Have a good week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay  :)

Week of October 22, 2018

Ever had  a conversation with someone who doubted or worse yet, made fun of you, your dreams or your ideas?  It’s the worse kind of feeling but instead of feeling bad, frustrated or angry, turn that energy around and just make your dream or idea happen. You’ll have to have to make sacrifices in your time  and energy, and you’ll have to persevere through numerous obstacles but don’t stop….. show them what happens when you don’t give up. Stay positive, work hard, and make it happen…. When you feel like giving up, remember there’s a lot of haters you have to prove wrong.

A few announcements:

  • I’m still looking for a few students interested in training to become one of the Menehune Credit Union tellers.  You’ll spend a day at the Lihue office training and then work weekly on campus. It’s great experience for your resume and you’ll learn about personal finance.  Email me if you want to sign up.
  • Freshmen you have a mandatory parent night on Monday and everyone else, you might want to check out the Financial Aid/FAFSA night at the LRC on Tuesday night.
  • Advisory reps -- we have a meeting this Thursday in the LRC.

Week of October 1, 2018

All of us have worries and concerns in life….. things we are scared of, things we are dreading, worries about what “might” happen or what “might not” happen.  We have to stop worrying about the “what ifs” in our life.  I love this quote -- “Don’t count the days…make the days count” because it’s a great reminder to stop counting the days until this happens, or until that gets done, and instead start focusing on making each day count as it is happening.

In life, all we can do is our best… we put our heart and soul into our work and lay it out there.  After that there is absolutely nothing that worrying will do for you. ALWAYS do your best and then focus on the positive, focus on what you can control, and let go of the things that you can’t.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

It’s the last week of the quarter…. There’s evening tutoring and morning tutoring available if you need it; put in the time to do your best work.

College visits this week (you must sign up online; check out the Counselor’s Corner on the WHS website):

  • Tuesday -- 12:30 pm, Hawaii Pacific University

  • Wednesday -- 1pm, University of Hawaii @ Manoa

Wednesday is the last day to sign up for the National Honor Society; applications are available in the LRC on the front counter or through your advisory teacher.

September 24, 2018

Why does being a good person matter?  The advisory reps and I have been talking about being kind and how a culture of kindness can help to change our school.  They are in the middle of a 2 week challenge-- smiling, greeting and saying hi to people on campus, especially those they don’t know.  We all know how difficult it is to be kind, especially when we have issues in our own personal lives or if we’ve had a previous negative experience with that person. However, I invite each of you to consciously look for ways to be kind over the next two weeks….I think you’ll find that kindness has a boomerang effect in your life! Watch this short video below… it was made in Hawaii awhile ago, but the message still rings true.

Simple act of kindness

Here’s what’s going on this week:

  • Remember, if you’re interested in signing up for the National Honor Society, please see your advisor or Mrs. Ishida in the LRC for an app

  • College visits this week: Wednesday 9:40 am, Pacific University and Thursday 12:30 pm - UH Hilo.  Sign up on this link: WHS Counselor Corner …. Scroll down to September 26 and 27 and click to put your name on the list.  You have to register in order to attend.

  • ASVAB testing is on Wednesday, 8 am in the LRC.  Again, please see your counselor to sign up.

Remember….

  • You should be in school wear everyday…. Period.

  • There’s two more weeks left in quarter one…. Get your work in, study hard, and get your grades up, especially if you plan to participate in extracurricular activities.

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay :)

Weekly bulletin -- September 17, 2018

It’s Homecoming week!!  Lots of daily dress up days and activities leading up to Friday’s game at Hanapepe.  Liko sent everyone the modified bell schedule last week; we’re on an A,B,A,B,A to allow for the noon time rallies.  I’m not calling any afternoon meetings this week except for new teachers on Thursday to allow you all time to work with students after school.  However, morning meetings can/have been scheduled; please attend those that you are required to.

Please be sure your attendance is done at the beginning of each class; if a student arrives tardy with an excuse note, remember to change his/her attendance from absent to tardy.  Also, please do not hold students back in your class, sending them late/tardy to their next period. Our new call out system sends out an automatic message to parents at 4:10 pm daily; please be sure you’ve submitted your attendance for the day before 4:00 pm as parents call immediately after that checking and challenging our records of their child’s attendance.

Please note:

  • Pre-fire inspection is this Thursday; I sent out the checklist last week.  Please be sure your work area is in compliance
  • Counselors will be out 2 days this week -- Tuesday/Thursday -- for meetings and I’ll be off campus 2 days also for training -- Tuesday/Friday.

ADVISORY this week:

  • Tuesday/Thursday -- please use as study hall.
    • Seniors should be working on completing their PTP; Mr. Stengel will be checking them off before Christmas break.

Reminders --

  • please continue to send students with no schoolwear to me within the first 10 minutes of period 1 and 5 daily so I can issue them a shirt, financial obligation, and detention.  I’ll send them back ASAP with a note.

Weekly bulletin -- August 20, 2018

Thank you again everyone for a very well received Open House last Wednesday.  I failed to mention Tessa Samio’s name in my mahalos…. Tessa helped set up at the theater and stayed all evening to help Eula with manning the food table outside the office as well as greeting and directing parents back on campus.  I’m truly very thankful for the hard work that each of you put in every day for our students and school; it’s what makes Waimea HS special.

We have department meeting time after school on Tuesday and extended time on Thursday for:

Weekly bulletin -- August 13, 2018

Week one down in the record books…. I saw a lot of good things going on in classrooms while walking around campus-- teachers referring to their blue tape/Learning Objective, active movement and engagement, and a lot of relationship building!  All I’m doing for the first two weeks is just looking for what’s on your blue tape. Please continue to write out what you want kids to learn, not do…. Doesn’t sound like a big difference, but it is.

We welcome our newest staff member, security guard Kevin Parbo, who started on Friday.  We now have three security on campus; they have split the school into three sections to monitor and rotate through each day.  Please introduce yourself to Kevin and welcome him to WHS.

If you haven’t already done so, please:

  • Submit your syllabus for approval
  • Have your blue tape up...  There was a great suggestion from Mr. Altomare after last week’s session with Dave Holden that we begin putting up our “Big Idea” also in the blue
  • Return your Opening of School year paperwork to the office (videos watched? Forms signed?)
  • Begin to collect your advisory students’ Opening of School year paperwork
  • Mark down your recess duty dates in a calendar and be visible on your days
  • Select an advisory rep for the year

Week of February 20, 2018

Enjoy another super busy, 4 day week everyone  :)

The teachers who went to the NCAC conference at Waipahu HS will be working together Tuesday to begin working on our 3-5 year plan; they will do a faculty presentation on their learning March 6th, the week before Jay Steele comes to work with us.

We need to continue working on the draft our Academic Plan for next year; your DHs and Leadership team have already begun brainstorming items to keep, delete, or add from our current plan.  On Tuesday, we’ll all meet in the LRC at 1:30 to listen to a guest speaker, Erika Sy, who will administering an approved online survey to our students about their resiliency factors.  After that, we’ll break into department groups and continue working on the AcPlan; you’ll be given time next Tuesday as well to review a draft plan by departments before we begin to put in the financial piece.  This Thursday is Admin data team #1 --  be sure to bring your student work samples as per your agreement last month.  Those teachers in Admin data team #2, please do tutoring in your classrooms and prepare for your meeting next week Thursday where you will need to bring student work samples.

Those of you interested in having your period 6 class attend a special assembly in the gym on Thursday 2/22, please see your DH asap as space is limited.  I’m looking for 5 more classes, tops….

11 school shootings so far in 2018

Aloha Parents, Guardians, and our Waimea Community,

Please click and read the link above.

With two school shootings just the week, I think it’s timely that Waimea High School students and staff are gearing up for our next active shooter drill on Tuesday, February 6th.  This drill will occur sometime between 8:30 - 9:30 am and will include Kauai Police Department officers firing blank gunshot rounds, running down the hallways and pounding on classroom doors.  Students and staff will have a second opportunity to put their training into practice, as they will have to decide if they will be able to safely run away from the danger or will need to lockdown and barricade their classrooms, preparing to fight if necessary.  As this is a drill, students and staff who decide to run will stop at the fence line or border of campus.

I also want to share the powerpoint presentation on Sheltering in Place that advisory representatives are using to teach their peers as a follow up to the accidental ballistic missile alert sent to Hawaii residents on January 13th.  We are asking students to go home and work with you on a family emergency plan that considers if members are together or scattered across the island.  Please feel free to use the information on the slides as talking points for this conversation.   Shelter in Place

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 338-6800.

Week of January 29, 2018

Hi everyone…. On paper, it’s a quiet week.  As a reminder, I’m out on vacation Monday - Thursday and out again on Oahu the following Wednesday - Friday for the National Career Academies Coalition conference with other staff members.  However,  I’m always available by phone/text/email and will get back to you as soon as I can.

I posted on our FB, school website and school app the following information re: our upcoming active shooter drill:

  • Tuesday February 6th; it will take place between 8:30 - 9:30 am and will include a KPD officer using blanks to simulate gunshots and his running on campus pounding on classroom doors.  Part of the feedback we received from students was they wanted the drill to be more realistic.  Your advisory reps are being asked to videotape their class’ response on that day -- if your class decides to stay, they will video how your students work together to barricade doors/lock windows/quiet everyone and silence phones.  If your class decides to run, they will video the class running to the nearest boundary line of campus.  The reps understand the importance of their video; it will not be used for any other purpose than for providing feedback to us as a school on how we can better prepare students and staff.  If you have any questions or concerns about the upcoming drills, please come and see one of the admin.  Thank you.

TUESDAY -- this is schoolwide TUTORING time from 1:30 - 2:45 pm.  Please be available to help tutor students or use the time to catch up on updating Infinite Campus or calling parents.

THURSDAY -- Short faculty meeting time in LRC at 1:30 to go over the active shooter drill the following Tuesday;; department meeting time to follow immediately after

Advisory notes – Please keep students in your classroom; they should not be walking around or going to other classes.

Tuesday:

  1. Juniors continue SBA math prep in the LRC or in their advisory classroom.  Please click on this link to see when you need to send them/your students report.  Matsuyama and Leota classes report to Matsuyama’s class

Thursday: Advisory rep meeting in LRC

  • Souza and Evens Junior advisory class -- report for math prep
  1. If your rep did not present the Shelter in Place powerpoint, please do it today.

Week of January 22, 2018

I’m going to be out quite a bit over the next 3 weeks.  This week I’m on Oahu for meetings Monday and Tuesday, on mainland next week Monday - Thursday, and on Oahu again the following Wednesday - Friday.  I’m always available by phone/text/email; I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

After debriefing our December active shooter drill with students, KPD, and district staff, we have planned our next active shooter drill for Tuesday February 6th; it will take place between 8:30 - 9:30 am and will include a KPD officer using blanks to simulate gunshots and his running on campus pounding on classroom doors. Thank you.

TUESDAY -- this is Professional Learning Community time on the calendar.  Allie, Penny, Robyn, Darlene, and Gayle will report to the LRC where they will be available to help anyone with their SLO, SLIC, NGSS template, grading questions, weaving in AVID strategies, addressing the “ELA pukas”, or work with your data team partner.  If you do not need assistance, please use this time to tutor students in your classroom.

THURSDAY -- Admin data team #2 -- meet in LRC from 1:30 - 2:45 pm.  All others do schoolwide tutoring in their own classrooms.

Week of 12/18/17(**Each of the underlined, italicized, red bold text below is a link )

Announcements:

  • Monday is an A day due to the 4 day week; bells have been adjusted.
    1. Please prepare for our active shooter drill during advisory period on December 21st:
      1. On Tuesday, 12/19 your advisory rep should be presenting to his/her class about the drill.  Please work together to mark your laminated campus map and determine what your “safety circle” looks like; in other words, if there is imminent danger within that circled area, you will lock down.  Remind them to take the drill seriously and if they decide to run, then run and not jog or walk.  Also we will have representatives from other schools and agencies observing us and taking notes as they plan for their own drills.
  • I shared the power point last week to teachers and will share it with students prior
  • The actual drill will run for approximately 10 minutes on Thursday.  After it is concluded, please be sure to process the event with your students and ask the questions listed on the power point.  Your rep should be taking notes to share back to the larger group.  We will extend advisory by 15 minutes and cut recess and period 6 a little shorter.  Please see below:

Week of 9/25/2017

Again, thank you everyone for all of your hard work and energy to make Homecoming week memorable for our students.  I know it takes a lot of your personal time but also know that the kids really appreciate it.

This week Tuesday and Thursday are extended meetings; next week we will have NO admin meetings in the afternoon.  Please read below carefully so you know where to report and what you need to bring with you.

The first quarter is rapidly winding down -- be sure you’ve contacted parents of each of your failing or in danger of failing students.  Also please be sure that you’re providing work for any of your students who have been suspended; see email from counselors for specifics.

Have a great week everyone!

Advisory notes

  1. Tuesday/Thursday this week - super short time because of modified bell schedules…. they should just do HW in advisory.  If they didn’t already do so, have your advisory representative share the powerpoint presentation from last week’s meeting with their classmates.  It was an abbreviated version of what we did at our opening meetings… wanted to give the reps background information so they be able to understand the importance of their role as we continue implementing the WASC recommendations-- to address the perception gap between adults and students.  The learning objective was to learn about the school/what we’ve been doing as a staff over last few years -- it is a lot of information and your representative may need help relaying it to other students.

  2. Please let your rep know that our next meeting is Thursday 9/28/17

MEETINGS this week

**NO meetings this afternoon during admin time -- giving this time to teachers to help support Homecoming and/or to do tutoring for students who are failing at mid-quarter.

Reminders:

  3. All teachers --- your IPDP needs to be loaded into PDE3 by next Friday (Sept. 29).
