Weekly bulletin -- May 28, 2019

Graduation/that last week before graduation is traditionally crazy, with a capital C… and last week was no exception.  However, at the end of the ceremony on Friday night and then later flipping through some pictures, I find myself thinking how truly blessed we are to work with our students, their family, and this westside community.  As wild and hairy as it get sometimes, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! :)

  3. Grading window is open to input final Q4, S2, and year grades -- be sure to read Wendi’s email carefully and send her an email when you’re done
  4. Tuesday advisory -- juniors meet in the cafeteria w/Mr. Herbig and WAFF representative.  Junior advisory teachers please walk your students to the cafe.
  5. Faculty meeting time --
      1. Tuesday after school we will be split into 2 groups --- Next year’s Leadership Team (will send you an email) will be meeting with me in U209; everyone else please report to the LRC to read the rough draft WASC report
      2. Thursday after school -- final meeting and year end celebration.  Please bring a potluck item to share
  6. Please be visible this last week …. If you need assistance, please call the office and if you don’t get through, please text either Penny or me.

Weekly bulletin -- May 6, 2019

I spent 4th period on Friday in the gym with Kawika’s Engineering class watching them launch their straw rockets with General Dynamic engineers.  Students designed and created two different rockets, hoping that their iteration would fly the farthest. After one round, they were encouraged to think about the flight of their individual designs and then make adjustments or corrections before doing a final launch.  They couldn’t add anything; they could only take away something. Students were very supportive of each other and clearly enjoyed the challenge!

Weekly bulletin -- April 29, 2019

This week Mr. Casillas’ students competed against each other to create the strongest cardboard tower.  Working under a time deadline, they put their design thinking skills to the test as they had to ideate before given 35 minutes to physically create their design using just two pieces of cardboard and a hot glue gun.  This is a screenshot of a video of the winning team; their prototype held 305 pounds which was Mr. Casillas plus an additional 95 pounds of “stuff” that kids gave him to hold while balancing on the tower!

On the right is one of the bell schedule proposals (#10) on the link from last week’s faculty meeting slide deck… but just in case, here it is again.  If you did not attend last week’s meeting, you missed a student presentation/pitch advocating for a bell schedule change as well as an opportunity to do a chalk talk about some of the policies and procedures for the upper academies AND sign up for the committee you want to work on to discuss/come up with recommendations for the rest of the group.  Teachers who missed last week already received an email from me re signing up for your committee -- during afternoon meeting time on Tuesday, please report to the LRC so you can do your chalk talk and sign up for your committee.  Mrs. Davalos will be there to answer any questions you may have.  I’ll be there to answer any questions you may have about bell schedule options as I’ve asked Mrs. Rita to do a HSTA vote on Thursday.  Also in the LRC on Tuesday after school will be Wendi’s grading/IC review for our newer teachers; they have already been sent an email asking them to report to the LRC during afternoon meeting time so they can get some additional help and support.  Quarter 4/Semester 2/Year end grades can be tricky and if not done correctly, hold up report card distribution and year end closing for everyone. If you were asked to attend Wendi’s training, please be there on time.

REMINDERS:

  • Tuesday -- make up session for ‘chalk talk’ and committee sign ups, questions about bell schedule (w/Mahina) and Wendi’s grading/IC review

  • Seniors are in Q4 and under senior agreement terms/conditions to walk next month at graduation.  Please remind them to make good choices, get to song practice on time and wear their uniforms!

  • We’re continuing SBA math testing this week; please refer to the BLUE list that Lita sent out this  week.

  • On the front counter are failure letters that you should send home to parents now before we get too far into the quarter.  Even if student is borderline passing now, please write up a notice and be sure to have student sign it. Be sure to keep a list of whom you send home failure letters; it’s documentation that we’ve warned student and parents.  If student is truant, attempt to advise parents of the impending failure via email.

Weekly bulletin -- April 22, 2019

On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce luncheon and watching two of our students, Kalena Numazawa-Pacanas (l) and Samantha Bostick (r), receive scholarships to help with college expenses next year.  Both students have incredible stories of resilience and grit that they shared with the audience: Kalena being the oldest of 9 children from a blended family, the first in her family to attend college and already is working two jobs to save money for tuition and other expenses, and Samantha who has juggled enormous academic, JROTC, and athletic responsibilities over four years to finish as a honor graduate.  The third picture is of Kallen and Sara who worked together to videotape Mrs. Najima’s visit to Lisa Davalos’ US History class on Wednesday; they’re being asked to create two versions of the visit -- a short one that can be shared on MTV3 with the entire student body and a longer version that other SS classes can use. The last picture is a group shot of Mrs. Najima, her son Scott, and Lisa’s period 2 class.  Mrs. Najima’s pictures from 1949-1951 of our school and life on Kauai are saved on Google Drive; please contact Lisa if you’d like to have them shared with you.

Weekly bulletin -- April 15, 2019

Pictures of from last Friday when John Altomare’s Design Tech class had visitors from Habitat for Humanity. The students have been working on a project based learning assignment, and have been virtually constructing 3D models and animations of building plans for a new project that Habitat is building in Eleele Iluna and in Waimea, behind the Tech Center. KCC instructor Jon Lucas who co-teaches the class with John, invited Rick Aitkenhead (Project Planning Director) and Chris Young to come and meet with the students to talk about the project.  Rick and Chris walked around and spoke with each student asking questions about their renderings. It was a great learning experience for all!

It is PBA time for our CTE students -- Monday will be the final day where students seeking a CTE honor diploma will do their presentations before panels.  Students are excused from classes for this event but are responsible for all work missed.

On the front counter are failure letters that you should send home to parents now before we get too far into the quarter.  Even if student is borderline passing now, please write up a notice and be sure to have student sign it. Be sure to keep a list of whom you send home failure letters; it’s documentation that we’ve warned student and parents.

Weekly bulletin -- April 8, 2019

Answer: Exactly as Bob Saligumba explained last Thursday…. “One bite at a time.”  Beginning this Thursday, upper academy members begin eating elephants by working on their processes, protocols, and agreements for next year; freshmen continue working on their plan.

Every Thursday for the rest of the year, unless otherwise notified, are academy meeting times.  Please do not make other plans during this administrative time.

Also, on the front counter are failure letters that you should send home to parents now before we get too far into the quarter.  Even if student is borderline passing now, please write up a notice and be sure to have student sign it. Be sure to keep a list of whom you send home failure letters; it’s documentation that we’ve warned student and parents.

Weekly bulletin -- February 11, 2019

  • Congratulations to our girls’ varsity basketball team for their incredible run at this weekend’s HHSAA tournament!  With only 7 girls, they ran and shot their way to a 3rd place finish, coming from behind yesterday against Hanalani and pulling out a 72-60 win.  The girls suffered only one loss, to the number 1 seed Hawaii Baptist Academy, on Friday night. Please give them a high-five or big hug when you see them this week!
  • On the right is a picture of our 14 Waimea HS staff along with Kapaa HS and the NCAC staff.  We had a great two day workshop learning how a school with very similar demographics (other than their size…) as ours is in the process of transforming their community through wall to wall career academies by focusing on the 10 standards of practice.  I’m looking forward to Jay Steele’s return this month to our school (26th and 27th) and then a follow up session with Dave Holden (who did our opening session in August) later this semester on how to plan cross content projects.

Weekly bulletin -- February 4, 2019

  • Wanted to share some pictures from the Na Kilo Aina PBL with Kealakai’s students.  In November, they counted opihi at Nohili Beach at PMRF and then returned to class to measure, weigh and collect data on the reproductive cycles of the opihi by finding the gonad index percentage.  Last week they were up at Kokee with Katie Castle with KCRP and few volunteers to pull the evasive beard bush at Iliau Trail Loop and plant keiki Iliau and native hibiscus…. Check out the before and after pictures!

  • Last week, I met with baseball and tennis athletes and their parents to talk to them about our vaping problem on campus and to ask for their help in doing some research of their own and then talking about it with their son or daughter.  My message to the athletes was ‘you are all influential people on campus; use your influence to help yourself and others to make good choices about vaping.’ This week Wednesday I will meet with the softball athletes and parents. Please talk to your students too; we need to talk more about it and share the dangers.  Faculty time next Thursday (2/14) will be a vaping presentation by Val Saiki and our trainer, Vanessa, to help increase our own knowledge.

  • Please remind students who want to attend the LEI 2019 event at the Sheraton in April to submit their permission forms ASAP to me (deadline is Wednesday); the first 40 students who turn in completed forms will go.  Students in Fermin’s ELL, Souza’s PHS core, and Erdmann’s HOST classes were given permission forms.

Weekly bulletin -- January 21, 2019

I hope you had a chance to relax and rest over the long weekend; we have a lot ahead of us this semester --- starting our WASC mid-cycle report, prepping for SBA/ACT and end of course exams, planning/turning in your monthly pacing guides, AND continuing our transition to an academy school.  Within the next few weeks, there’s a lot of professional development workshops and classes that I’m sending people to and/or having them come to us.  Through all of this, I ask that you take some time to reflect and to find joy in the journey and find joy in working with students.  Sometimes we have to look hard to find joy as our work as educators is never ending and often times, unappreciated…. That’s why it’s so important to take time for yourself and recharge your batteries when you have these long weekends or holidays.

Weekly bulletin -- January 7, 2019

Happy New Year everyone!  I appreciate all the extra time and effort that each of you put in to do your work with our students and so hope you each had a chance to relax, rest, rejuvenate...and put work on the side to celebrate with family and friends.  That being said, since we didn’t have a Christmas celebration, I’d like to buy everyone lunch on Thursday so please come to our afternoon meeting in the LRC with an appetite. We have some things to celebrate and many events coming up on the calendar to plan for this semester… so see you all after school in the LRC.

Happening this week:

  • Grading window opens this week; closes Friday 2:45 pm.  Please be sure you submit your grades on time after checking them carefully and let Wendi know when you’ve submitted them

Hi everyone…..yes, it’s the last week of quarter two and the first semester and while many of us are tired and burnt out on school, now is not the time to give up.  Keep pushing and doing your best all the way to the end; if you have an opportunity to re-do a test or re-write a paper or assignment, do it… you will thank yourself later.  All of this is part of the learning process…..

Here’s what’s happening this week:

Tuesday

  • FFA students to Kapaa HS for district competition
  • Clinical Health students to Kekaha Elementary to teach CPR
  • Advisory -- be sure you’ve completed all registration activities and submitted
  • Evening tutoring in the LRC

Wednesday

  • 6 pm, Winter Concert at Waimea Theater -- band, choir, and Poly Music classes.  Please come and join them!

Thursday

  • Advisory -- advisory rep meeting in LRC; also senior class officers meet in LRC small conference room
  • No evening tutoring

Friday

  • 2:35 pm….. Christmas break begins!!  See you back on January 8, 2019!! Have a safe holiday season with your family and friends…. Make good choices!!

December 3, 2018

Some of the more interesting conversations I have with students are when they end up in my office trying to convince me that their behavior should be excused because something or someone else  made them angry or upset.  It doesn’t work that way. You are always responsible for your words and actions…. And the sooner you learn that important lesson, the sooner you can learn from the experience and move on.  There will always be things going on around you that could trigger a negative response. Part of “adulting” is learning to be responsible for your words and actions and accept the consequences that come along with them.  Learn how to work through a problem or concern.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

  • TRIPOD survey will be given out Monday and Tuesday in your classes; please be thoughtful in your responses as we use this data to help determine schoolwide decisions/direction
  • REGISTRATION activities continue this week Tuesday; please be sure you’re keeping up as the deadline for your registration card is Dec. 13, 2018.  We have teachers/staff who can help you through the process-- come to the LRC this Wednesday night from 5-8 pm
  • SANTA’S VILLAGE is Wednesday night in the cafe
  • MODIFIED bell schedule on Thursday b/c we have an all-school assembly in the gym with speaker Jerry Ackermann from 11 am-12 pm

November 19, 2018

This is Thanksgiving week…. A time when we stop for a bit and take time to thank the people around us for their support and love.  We spend the weekend eating and celebrating with family and friends and beginning to prepare for the Christmas holidays ahead. But how many of us also take the time to think about doing something NOW, making a sacrifice TODAY, so that we can be in a better place in the future?  Think about it….. Putting in the time and doing the work now will allow you to reap the benefits later -- whether it’s completing assignments that are due (or overdue) or getting up earlier and working out to ensure you’re ready for your next KIF season.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday are early release days @ 11:30 am.
  • Tuesday is Student Review Night  from 12-4 pm and 5-8 pm. Invite your parents!
  • Wednesday is safety drill day….report to your period 1 class; we’ll begin at 8:45 am.  After drills are done we go to recess, lunch, and finish with period 2.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone; hope you have a great (and safe) long weekend with your family and friends!!!

WE are responsible for our own destiny.  We make choices every single day -- and they can be positive ones or they can be negative ones.  We can let ourselves be negatively influenced by our friends or peers and get derailed from the path we want….. OR we can learn to make good choices a daily habit.  We can choose to surround ourselves with positive people and activities… or not.  Choose well and choose wisely because many of your decisions have far-reaching and long-lasting consequences.

A few announcements:

  • KCC advisory visit this Thursday -- to Mrs. Lindsey-Meyer’s class
  • Kauai Girls Summit -- this Thursday, all day off campus
  • Friday -- Seniors’ KCC #FindYourFuture event!

Congratulations to the VB girls for placing 4th in last week’s state tournament -- great job ladies!

Have a good week everyone!

Week of October 22, 2018

Ever had  a conversation with someone who doubted or worse yet, made fun of you, your dreams or your ideas?  It’s the worse kind of feeling but instead of feeling bad, frustrated or angry, turn that energy around and just make your dream or idea happen. You’ll have to have to make sacrifices in your time  and energy, and you’ll have to persevere through numerous obstacles but don’t stop….. show them what happens when you don’t give up. Stay positive, work hard, and make it happen…. When you feel like giving up, remember there’s a lot of haters you have to prove wrong.

A few announcements:

  • I’m still looking for a few students interested in training to become one of the Menehune Credit Union tellers.  You’ll spend a day at the Lihue office training and then work weekly on campus. It’s great experience for your resume and you’ll learn about personal finance.  Email me if you want to sign up.
  • Freshmen you have a mandatory parent night on Monday and everyone else, you might want to check out the Financial Aid/FAFSA night at the LRC on Tuesday night.

Week of October 1, 2018

All of us have worries and concerns in life….. things we are scared of, things we are dreading, worries about what “might” happen or what “might not” happen.  We have to stop worrying about the “what ifs” in our life.  I love this quote -- “Don’t count the days…make the days count” because it’s a great reminder to stop counting the days until this happens, or until that gets done, and instead start focusing on making each day count as it is happening.

In life, all we can do is our best… we put our heart and soul into our work and lay it out there.  After that there is absolutely nothing that worrying will do for you. ALWAYS do your best and then focus on the positive, focus on what you can control, and let go of the things that you can’t.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

It’s the last week of the quarter…. There’s evening tutoring and morning tutoring available if you need it; put in the time to do your best work.

College visits this week (you must sign up online; check out the Counselor’s Corner on the WHS website):

  • Tuesday -- 12:30 pm, Hawaii Pacific University

  • Wednesday -- 1pm, University of Hawaii @ Manoa

Wednesday is the last day to sign up for the National Honor Society; applications are available in the LRC on the front counter or through your advisory teacher.

September 24, 2018

Why does being a good person matter?  The advisory reps and I have been talking about being kind and how a culture of kindness can help to change our school.  They are in the middle of a 2 week challenge-- smiling, greeting and saying hi to people on campus, especially those they don’t know.  We all know how difficult it is to be kind, especially when we have issues in our own personal lives or if we’ve had a previous negative experience with that person. However, I invite each of you to consciously look for ways to be kind over the next two weeks….I think you’ll find that kindness has a boomerang effect in your life! Watch this short video below… it was made in Hawaii awhile ago, but the message still rings true.

Simple act of kindness

Here’s what’s going on this week:

  • Remember, if you’re interested in signing up for the National Honor Society, please see your advisor or Mrs. Ishida in the LRC for an app

  • College visits this week: Wednesday 9:40 am, Pacific University and Thursday 12:30 pm - UH Hilo.  Sign up on this link: WHS Counselor Corner …. Scroll down to September 26 and 27 and click to put your name on the list.  You have to register in order to attend.

  • ASVAB testing is on Wednesday, 8 am in the LRC.  Again, please see your counselor to sign up.

Remember….

  • You should be in school wear everyday…. Period.

  • There’s two more weeks left in quarter one…. Get your work in, study hard, and get your grades up, especially if you plan to participate in extracurricular activities.

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Anguay :)

Weekly bulletin -- September 17, 2018

It’s Homecoming week!!  Lots of daily dress up days and activities leading up to Friday’s game at Hanapepe.  Liko sent everyone the modified bell schedule last week; we’re on an A,B,A,B,A to allow for the noon time rallies.  I’m not calling any afternoon meetings this week except for new teachers on Thursday to allow you all time to work with students after school.  However, morning meetings can/have been scheduled; please attend those that you are required to.

Please be sure your attendance is done at the beginning of each class; if a student arrives tardy with an excuse note, remember to change his/her attendance from absent to tardy.  Also, please do not hold students back in your class, sending them late/tardy to their next period. Our new call out system sends out an automatic message to parents at 4:10 pm daily; please be sure you’ve submitted your attendance for the day before 4:00 pm as parents call immediately after that checking and challenging our records of their child’s attendance.

Please note:

  • Pre-fire inspection is this Thursday; I sent out the checklist last week.  Please be sure your work area is in compliance
  • Counselors will be out 2 days this week -- Tuesday/Thursday -- for meetings and I’ll be off campus 2 days also for training -- Tuesday/Friday.

Weekly bulletin -- August 27, 2018

Thank you everyone for prepping school for Hurricane/Tropical Storm Lane; I’m thankful we were spared major damage and weather issues and am VERY thankful we got an extra two days off to get our own homes/families situated!  Also, thank you to everyone who blitzed last week and has semi-permanently warped thumbs. :) We won the first round of the Hawaiimoji competition against Kauai HS and are now eligible to compete for an additional $10,000 against all the other weekly winners this football season!! Stay tuned for more information and start dates.

Reminder --

  • please send students with no schoolwear to me within the first 10 minutes of period 1 and 5 daily so I can issue them a shirt, financial obligation, and detention.  I’ll send them back ASAP with a note.
  • Please be sure to be present/visible for your recess duty.  Students have been good but we’re noticing some “hot spots” at LRC and outside S103 lab.

This week will be a “catch up week” as last week was a bust and next week is a short one (Labor Day holiday this coming Monday):

Afternoon meeting times this week:

  • We have extended meeting time on Tuesday for concussion training, military information, and EES compliance pieces
  • Thursday is partner planning time -- see the linked document for your partner and what you’re being given time to work on.  Remember, you can also meet in the mornings -- Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday-- if you still have things to work on

ADVISORY this week:

  • Tuesday--our first Advisory rep meeting… please send your rep directly to the LRC so we can maximize our time.  I’ll send in attendance to Tessa.
  • Thursday -- Please start chasing down your advisory student’s opening school forms, especially their free/reduced lunch forms and their MVA forms.  Otherwise, please use time as a study hall period
